Can you increase my Shopify speed score?
Although we do everything we can to increase your score, we can’t guarantee specific score changes as that is largely impacted by the apps you are using. Google PageSpeed Insights and the Shopify speed score tools both use the same engine, Lighthouse, and although they can be helpful, the scoring on these tools is not well suited for Shopify / eCommerce sites. A general analysis tool like Google PageSpeed Insights or the Shopify speed score will never favour eComm sites that have robust asset content, use engaging features, and rely on many 3rd party apps to run. Most of the successful stores we come across score in the range of 20–35 with the Shopify speed score. Tip: don’t put too much attention to the Shopify speed score, especially if your site is feature-rich.
Does a faster load speed = a higher score?
That depends heavily on what tool you’re using to measure score and speed; they aren’t always connected (go figure). A faster load speed usually results in a faster score when the optimization warnings are based on factors that contribute to actual load speed. To measure actual load speed, we use WebPageTest.org.
If you’re using Google PageSpeed Insights or the Shopify speed score (both are based on the same engine so they have similar scoring), then the score is based on “emulation” (i.e. a simulated testing environment) rather than real-world load speed. Some key optimizations like lazy loading and image optimization will often raise the score while also improving load speed; however, raising the score in an emulation-based tool can sometimes decrease actual performance.
We always recommend focusing on optimizing what’s important for Shopify sites first (everything we cover in this service), from there, if you want to dive into remaining warnings, we can advise on potential approaches and solutions.
Can you increase my Google PageSpeed Insights (PSI) score?
Google PSI is a good general tool to uncover ideas for performance optimization… but it’s not a great tool for Shopify / eCommerce sites. Most feature-rich eComm sites with 3rd party apps don’t score well. Period. But there’s good news: the score is not equal to actual load speed. Your score may increase, but the PSI scoring system doesn’t correlate to actual speed so we can’t guarantee a score increase (see previous FAQ above).
We absolutely recommend optimizing your site but make sure you aren’t sacrificing revenue generating or customer experience apps just for the sake of your score.
Can you make my site load in under ‘X’ seconds?
As outlined in the previous FAQ’s, this depends on a few factors:
How many 3rd party apps you’re using on your store
What tool you’re using to gauge the site speed
What the connection speed is of the tool and the user
How optimized your site is (this is the area we are looking after!)
As a goal, we always want to aim for a load time of 4 seconds or less with WebPageTest at an LTE connection speed. This will translate to less than 2 seconds on a faster internet connection speed.
Is my site secure?
